      ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INSTITUTION

The Institution was established in the Year 1949. At first it was named as “Gopabandhu Ayurvedic Institute” and later on “Gopabandhu Ayurveda Vidyapitha, Puri” and again it was renamed as “GOPABANDHU AYURVEDA MAHAVIDYALAYA, PURI” in the Year 1971. This Institute has been upgraded to the status of Model Institute of Govt. of India for its higher order academic activities and imparts teaching to U.G. & P.G. This Institution has also been declared as Nodal Centre for Ph.D. (Ay.) study by the Utkal University from the Year 2010-11. The Institution was established in the Year 1949.     • AREA

The area of this institution is covered with 10 acres of land. Within the campus different Deptts., 150  bedded in-door Hospital, out-door, Administrative Office, Laboratories, Hostels (Both  Ladies & Gents), Herbal Garden & Pharmacy etc. are functioning.

    • DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHING

From the year 1949-1960, this institution imparted teaching leading to the diploma of D.A.M.S. & Visag Ratna of four and half year course and imparted teaching both in Ayurveda and Modern medicines. As it was felt that, D.A.M.S. diploma holders had an orientation in modern medicines and their service were utilized by the Govt. in modern side during acute dearth of doctors in the State, the admission for such course was stopped for 2 years i.e. from 1961-63, a total number of 298 students completed this course successfully & most of them were employed subsequently under the Health Deptt.

From the year 1949-1960, this institution imparted teaching leading to the diploma of D.A.M.S. & Visag Ratna of four and half year course and imparted teaching both in Ayurveda and Modern medicines. Thereafter, Suddha Ayurvedic course of study by Central Suddha Ayrvedic Board was introduced from the Session 1963-64 leading to the degree of B.S.A.M. which extend over a period of five & half years duration includes Housemanship for a period of six month. The examination of the above course was conducted by the Orissa State Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicines. A total number of 50 students completed this course successfully during the year 1963-64 to 1973. The Mahavidyalaya got affiliation with the Utkal University during the year 1973-74. Mean while a course of study was prescribed by the Central Council of Indian Medicines, New Delhi which was introduced in this Mahavidyalaya since 1976. This course extends over a period of five & half years including housemanship training for a period of six months.

A pass in intermediate or equivalent qualification, was prescribed as the minimum qualification for admission to the degree course of B.A.M.S. in the admission year 1973-74. The Central Council of Indian Medicines, New Delhi has prescribed the minimum qualification for admission into B.A.M.S. degree course intermediate with Science in the admission year 1986-87 and five & half years course including four & half years and one year Housemanship training has been introduced in this College as per the syllabus of CCIM, New Delhi in the admission year 1987-88. From the year 2013-14 the admission into B.A.M.S. course shall be conducted through O.J.E. Exam., Odisha.
The Kayachikitsa, Shalyatantra, Rasashastra & Bhaisajyakalpana, Prasutitantra & Kaumarbhritya department are up-graded to Post-Graduate level. The course of study of M.D./M.S. (Ay.) extends over a period of three years duration since 2007. Ph.D. programme in Ayurveda has been introduced in this College and in the year 2010-11 this College has been declared as Ph.D. Nodal Centre for Ayurveda. D.Litt & D.Sc programme in Ayurved has also been introduced in this College from the year 2013-14.
